Brand Management
Brand management is a hoot. No better word describes this class. Mark Ritson is first and foremost an entertainer, and someone who is clearly passionate about brands. Which makes for an entertaining way to spend a Sunday. Although, it aint particularly taxing – more like watching or spending an afternoon watching a movie. There is also no feedback to be obtained from this course. That is because there are no assignments. - I don’t expect to actually do that well in this course in that regard – you basically hand in your final exam and assume you will get somewhere near the mean. Which is OK. The lesson from brands is:
1) Respect the brand heritage
2) Focus, focus, focus
3) Brand = Brand Equity
Overall, good fun, but don’t expect to be challenged…
The end in sight
Well not really. But in some ways, it feels as though it is. When I completed Leadership last term, it was almost like a capstone on the MBA. It was like this is what I needed to work out by doing this course. Could I have done this by simply reading some books? No, I don’t think so. You need to be placed in a vulnerable position to cook up some internal conflict. I did, and that has made a tremendous difference for me. I am at an interesting junction now. I have 5 or 6 subjects to go, but largely they will be filler subjects. I hope I can some more things out of this course, but largely I feel as though I have achieved what I set out to do.
Subjects this term: Brand management, Industry Studies in Asia and Managing New Ventures
